O.D. Grinder - Job Description

We are hiring for a 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift O.D. Grinder. The O. D. Grinder is responsible for setting up and operating all or any of the external grinding machines to grind external cylindrical surfaces of rotating metal work pieces or arbors. This position is also responsible for analyzing blueprints, shop orders, and specifications and selecting the appropriate tooling according to their knowledge of grinding procedures. Sets up and operates internal grinding machines to grind internal cylindrical and tapered surfaces of rotating metal workpieces, such as tool, die and machine parts, analyzing blueprints and shop orders and selecting tooling according to their knowledge of internal grinding procedures to hold required tolerances.


Duties

  • Studies the blueprint or the shop order to visualize grinding to be done and plans the sequence of events.
  • Familiar with ANSI standards Dresses the wheel manually or with preset device.
  • Grinds arbors as required for the job.
  • Grinds centers as required for the job.
  • Holds tolerances of less than .0002 for diameter and concentricity for single and double diameters.
  • Communicates well with co-workers and supervisor to receive instructions and coordinate activities.
  • Grinds angles and hold tolerances of less than 30 minutes.
  • Moves controls and reads dials to grind work piece between centers.
  • Selects and sets work surface speed, in feed, and travel rate of powered table, and selects the proper wheel grade for the job.
  • Positions and tightens stops to set depth of grinding wheel cut and stroke of the worktable.
  • Moves controls to feed wheel to the work piece either manually or automatically.
  • Turns valve handle and directs the flow of coolant against the wheel and the work piece.
  • Verifies dimensions of ground work piece for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as micrometers, drop indicators, gage blocks, Swede gages, and other precision measuring equipment.
  • Dresses side and face of grinding wheels to specified profile including starter.
  • Grinds all grades of materials.
  • Checks and maintains lubrication and/or coolant supply of machine as required.
  • Trains all operators assigned for training.
  • Changes and balances grinding wheels as required.
  • Must maintain a consistent and acceptable productive rate at the required quality level.
  • Must be capable of using mechanical means to move parts, arbors, and wheels as required.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area and observes safe work practices.

Requirements

  • Between 2 and 4 years of trade school, vocational education, work experience or apprenticeship. Required to have experience with similar machines or materials.
  • Must have experience reading and understanding blueprints.
  • Must have experience working within tight tolerances.
  • Experience with grinding operations
  • Able to read, write, speak and understand spoken and written English with sufficient proficiency to perform position requirements accurately and safely.
  • Must be dependable
  • Hours are 7:00AM to 3:30PM, 3:30PM to 12:00AM, or 11:00PM to 7:30AM.
