Metal Fabrication Production CNC Operator- Live Tooling/Milling Vertical Machining or Lathe - Job Description


Title: CNC Operator Department: CNC

Reports To: Director of CNC Machining Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for various production activities including machine operation, final assembly, and inspection. Works off of work order and verbal instruction, checks parts, communicates issues to others. Operate CNC Machines to produce precision metal parts and components in a timely and efficient manner. Uses hand tools; may work on manual machines from time to time as required.

Essential Functions

Machine Operation

  1. Operate punch press, press brake, turret, water jet, laser, and CNC machining center to run production as required following standard machine operation procedures.
  2. Applies lubricant as needed.
  3. Understand work orders, prints and/or drawings.
  4. Check, sharpen and/or replace cutting tools as required
  5. Perform mechanical tasks including loading and unloading vices, fixtures and parts.
  6. Establish and set appropriate tool offsets.
  7. Manufacture parts from raw material to completion per blue prints, piece prints, work orders and customer specifications.
  8. Measure in-process parts to conform to blue print, work orders, customer requirements and tolerances.
  9. De-burr and finish parts to customer specification.

Assembly

  1. Perform mechanical tasks including loading and unloading vices, fixtures and parts.
  2. Use hand and/or power tools to drill, ream, rivet, spot-weld, install hardware and/or fit components into place.

Finishing

  1. Use hand truck to move parts from department to department
  2. Use cleaning solutions and rust inhibitor for various materials
  3. Processes parts through chip removal equipment to match sample or work order requirements
  4. Loads vibratory, washer, deburring equipment with appropriate media or compound and processes parts.
  5. Processes parts through automated parts washing equipment.

Inspection

  1. Perform inspection of parts as assigned using provided gages and other inspection tools.
  2. Working knowledge of customer class and finish requirements

Global

  1. Review work order and verify job requirements and materials.
  2. Visually inspect production for burrs, scrapes, rust and other defects.
  3. Check production against sample and/or print using various gages, micrometers, calipers, etc.
  4. Notify appropriate personnel when non-conformance is discovered.
  5. Complete tag or move ticket including count, work order #, current operation, next operation, date, employee number/name.
  6. Separate rejected product for sorting.
  7. Verify, count, and package completed production.
  8. Return all equipment, parts, and tagged material etc. to proper storage areas.
  9. Maintain a clean and organized work area. Cleans area of parts, chips and debris at end of shift.
  10. Communicate all problems and other work related issues with supervisor.
  11. Receive, understand and follow all written and oral instruction.
  12. Timely and accurate completion of all paperwork associated with position. Update data collection system using barcode scanning and basic data entry.
  13. Comply with all company policies and procedures including safety and attendance requirements.
  14. Maintain, meet, or exceed rating on all performance evaluations.
  15. Participate in activities to increase personal skill level, overall departmental processes and product quality.
  16. Resolve day-to-day issues by working effectively with others.
  17. Other duties required to meet company needs as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Skills & Abilities

  1. Ability to speak, read and communicate in English
  2. Ability to read and understand blue prints and work instructions, company paperwork, ID tags, etc.
  3. OSHA required training in Lock-out / Tag-out, Hazard Communication, PPE and Emergency Evacuation.
  4. Basic shop math understanding.
  5. Basic understanding of assigned machines and equipment and gauges.
  6. Distinguish a variety of raw materials (stainless steel, cold rolled steel, etc.)
  7. Understand class requirements as it applies to finishing processes and part handling
  8. Operating knowledge of pallet jack, forklift when assigned, hoist and crane equipment.
  9. Effective communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills.

Minimum Physical Requirements

  1. 20/40 vision required with or without correction.
  2. Use of hands 100% of the workday.
  3. Ability to hear 100% of the workday
  4. Ability to stand and or walk 90% of the workday.
  5. Ability to exert physical force to push, pull, lift or carry 70 pounds frequently by one's self.
  6. Ability to work in shop environment - continuous exposure to potentially hazardous metal working machinery and equipment, loud noises, dust, mist, oils and solvents.
